Quick summary

The aim of the programme is to provide wrap-around support for young people at street level.

StreetSmart is an initiative which provides wrap-around support for young people at street level – a setting where parents, schools, and most other services have little reach. The project aims to contribute to a reduction in violence and crime uptake, increased levels of empowerment, and improved mental wellbeing.

The long-term aim of The Youth Association’s work in Barnsley is to establish a growth in resilience and empowerment among young people, underpinned by improved mental health and broadened aspirations. In pursuit of this, they intend for this project to i) change attitudes to violence and crime and ii) grow levels of participation among young people.

Recognising the limited extent to which this can be achieved during a short timeframe, they have set out a series of shorter-term aims to cover the lifespan of the StreetSmart project:

  1. Young people improve their mental wellbeing and self-awareness
  2. Young men develop their understanding of masculinity
  3. Young women are empowered through participation in sporting activity and creative arts
  4. Young people improve their understanding of crime and violence
