The Choices programme is aimed at showing young people they have a choice on whether they choose to carry a weapon or behave in a certain way. Steel City Amateur Boxing Club will highlight the impact those choices can have, through a number of knife crime workshops.
Steel City Amateur Boxing Club will help young people to understand the consequences (to themselves and others) of carrying and using knives and removing the sense of impunity that many knife-carriers have. They will work to reduce the prevalence of knife carrying and use by young people. They want to give young people the skill set they require to have the strength and character to not become involved in knife crime, gang violence and gang affiliation. The project provides a public health response to knife crime by providing a community-based intervention delivered by local people that will help prevent knife crime among young people. The project messages will be heard and received by young people from right across the community.
Steel City Amateur Boxing Club will also use boxing as an engagement tool as the sport promotes discipline. Boxing sessions taught by experienced staff will offer guidance on physical fitness. It will teach discipline and mental agility. It will be used as an outlet, as a way of releasing negative tension inside a safe space. Additional information will be given on nutrition and mental health awareness. They have experienced staff who have worked on similar projects and will also utilise young people that have already experienced some of their network programs such as Fight For Good.
