Purpose
The aim of the programme is to provide specialist African-Caribbean counsellors within Sheffield Women’s Aid services for African-Caribbean survivors of domestic abuse, recognising that women Sheffield Women’s Aid support have a preference for receiving such support by women from their own culturally-appropriate communities.

This initiative is a collaboration between Sheffield Women’s Aid and Adira. Both organisations are specialists in their respective areas, and are founded within the ‘by and for’ model of service delivery within their respective communities.
Sheffield Women’s Aid are a specialist commissioned domestic abuse service that provides refuge accommodation to 37 women and families, and Adira are a survivor-led mental health and wellbeing organisation, supporting African-Caribbean men and women with mental health issues.
This collaboration will be providing specialist African-Caribbean counsellors within Sheffield Women’s Aid services for African-Caribbean survivors of domestic abuse, recognising that women Sheffield Women’s Aid support have a preference for receiving such support by women from their own culturally-appropriate communities.
The aim will be to provide counselling for a total of four African-Caribbean women survivors of domestic abuse, for a total period of 16 weeks for each survivor. This would ensure the specialist counselling provided is culturally appropriate and understood specifically by the counsellor to meet the needs of survivors.
