Quick summary
The Onside Programme is a youth mentoring service, receiving referrals from key partner organisations and working in hotspot areas to bring about behavioural change and reduce youth reoffending rates.
Onside Mentoring is a youth mentoring service which aims to receive referrals from Sheffield Youth Justice Service, Sheffield Inclusion Centre, and local schools, and will run from July 2022-March 2023. Targeted diversionary activities will also be established in hotspot areas to increase the chances of behavioural change.
The initiative aims to; increase young people’s knowledge of how to live a healthy lifestyle both mentally and physically; reduce youth re-offending rates; help young people to develop interpersonal and self-management skills; promote youth voice through the core of the programme; and help young people in setting short, medium terms goals and provide exit pathways as an extension to the programme.
The service utilises the power of football and the Sheffield Wednesday brand, and uses trained sports youth workers to provide positive and relevant role models while delivering a programme which will target a select cohort of students who are at risk of exclusion, gang exploitation, and serious violence.
Activities are designed to reduce negative behaviour and assist young people in gaining control of emotional wellbeing. This involves one-to-one mentoring; physical activity; and group work developed with the benefit of insight from youth voice, vulnerability assessments and information provided by referral partners.
