The South Yorkshire Violence Reduction Unit (VRU) has visited Sheffield Dragons Martial Arts Academy.

The Academy, based on Orgreave Drive in Handsworth, Sheffield, offers martial arts classes in a range of different disciplines, for children aged 3 and over.

Alongside classes for children, Sheffield Dragons also offer adult and child sessions, along with other fitness and wellbeing facilities on-site.

The VRU visited the Academy as part of its efforts to support Operation Sceptre, a national week of police action on tackling knife crime, which ran from 16th May to 22nd May. Also in attendance on the visit were representatives from South Yorkshire Police and Sheffield City Council.

Graham Jones, Head of the South Yorkshire Violence Reduction Unit said: “Sport plays an important role in bringing communities together, providing a safe space for residents, and teaching young people discipline, control and the benefits of a healthy and active lifestyle.

“This supports the VRU’s ambition to prevent and reduce violence in South Yorkshire.

“As leaders in their field, Sheffield Dragons provide a wide range of facilities, from martial arts to a gym to a boxing academy.

“I’m pleased that the VRU was able to visit the Academy to see classes in action and chat to owners Terry and Lucy about the work they are doing and their plans for the future.”
