The South Yorkshire Violence Reduction Unit (VRU) has visited Barnsley Sexual Abuse and Rape Crisis Services (BSARCS).
BSARCS is a Barnsley charity which provides specialist therapy and wellbeing support to those who have experienced sexual abuse or violence.
The charity has received £19,800 in funding from the VRU’s 2023/24 Violence Reduction Fund, which supports young people aged 4-25.
This funding will be used for a project which aims to limit the multiple, significant, and harmful effects that an experience of sexual harm has on a child or young person’s life, through the provision of specialised trauma interventions.
Lynne Casserley, Chief Executive of BSARCS said: “BSARCS is delighted to receive a grant from the VRU to support our work with children.
“Children will be able to access advocacy or counselling in a more timely way, which is so important after a disclosure of sexual harm. The money we have been awarded will enable BSARCS specialist staff to work with children at home, at school, in our counselling rooms, or in a safe place of their choosing.
“BSARCS works with 1600 people each year, and we expect the numbers of people seeking help to increase year on year. Anyone needing support can call 01226 320140 or email info@bsarcs.org”
Graham Jones, Head of the South Yorkshire Violence Reduction Unit said: “Sexual abuse or violence has a devastating impact on victims, including on young people, who can suffer lifelong effects from the trauma they have experienced.
“Charities such as BSARCS do important work in making sure that young people who have been through horrendous ordeals are given the understanding, therapy, and support they need.
“I hope that the funding provided by the VRU will support this work, and make a real difference to those BSARCS work with.”
