Economic Abuse
Economic abuse involves a perpetrator using or misusing money which leads to them being able to have control over their partner’s current and future actions as well as their freedom of choice.
This can involve;
- Using credit cards without permission
- Putting contractual obligations in their partners name and possibly gambling with family assets
- Restricting access to essential resources, like food, clothing or transport
- Denying the means to improve a person’s economic status, this can be through employment, education or training
This can limit choices and access to safety.
Access to a lack of resources can result in victims staying with their abuser for longer and therefore experiencing more harm.
