Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is a collective term for a range of procedures involving partial or total removal of the external female genitalia for non-medical reasons.

Internationally this is recognised as a gross violation of the human rights of girls and women.

FGM can lead to extreme health risks for women and girls as well as psychological implications.

FGM is a crime in the UK and it is also illegal to take a British national or permanent resident abroad for FGM or to help someone do this.
