Quick summary

Domestic violence is a serious and longstanding issue that has affected the lives of many Roma children and young people, both boys and girls need support to understand what abuse is and how to challenge it.

There is very little data on the extent of domestic abuse and violence against women and girls in Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities, but hearing from individuals, it is a serious and long-standing problem.

Domestic violence is a serious and longstanding issue that has affected the lives of many Roma children and young people, so this project aims to support those young people across Doncaster.

Developing young people’s understanding of healthy relationships is critical. The programme will work with young men and young women to increase their emotional intelligence and subsequently their mental toughness and resilience to find and use strategies to keep themselves safe. In addition, the programme aims to develop the aspiration of the group by tackling some of the cultural stereotypes that as a young woman you are not allowed off anywhere, your brother is your boss, your father is your boss and that you are raised to babysit, clean and cook.

Also, the prevention work aims to reduce the propensity for risk taking behaviour, anti-social or criminal behaviour and reduce the likelihood of young people experiencing domestic abuse in their own relationships as either victim or perpetrator.
