Purpose

To prevent domestic abuse by challenging the existing ‘Bystander’ culture that exists in schools and wider society, to raises awareness of healthy cohesive and positive relationships to help children make more positive choices about their behaviour and where they can seek support.

It will also improve resources to frontline staff, particularly school support staff to enable them to understand domestic and sexual violence and abuse on children and young people, and how this can impact on community, school life, educational attainment and affect long-term life chances.

Quick summary

This project will use a whole school approach to adopt a ‘Bystander Model’, building their understanding that ending domestic abuse is everyone’s responsibility.

Haven will work with primary schools across Sheffield, with children aged 7-11 years old and school staff. They will adopt a ‘Bystander Model’, this will build their understanding that ending domestic abuse is everyone’s responsibility. Raising awareness of the signs of abuse and empowering them to intervene safely (where appropriate), and access help/support to start the process of culture change within individual relationships, families, communities and agencies.

The whole school approach for primary schools will incorporate whole school assemblies, a youth ambassador programme, which will be a six-week group work programme of workshops that aim to address, challenge and explore issues most relevant to the children and young people we are working with through participant engagement, in a trauma informed and safe environment. Also it will involve providing training workshops for teaching and support staff.
